Today, our group of philanthropists headed to Room at the Inn which was our first of three destinations. We met the volunteer director and she told us about the establishment. Rooms at the Inn is used to help up to thirty women and children get back on their feet. The building can hold up to 30 people. The women alone can stay up to six months and the women with children can stay up to nine months. They complete various chores in order to provide for themselves. While staying at this institution, they learn how to build their lives on their own.
Our second destination was the Ronald McDonald House. We split up into two different groups. One group cooked lunch for the establishment's residents, and the other group split into two groups and three people cleaned in the building and the other three people cleaned around the building. In the cleaning group, Pastor Eric told us about the patrons that reside here. Those people have children in the hospital that are 21 years old or younger. Meanwhile, we enriched the lives, or at least the lunch, of the Ronald McDonald House residents. We separated into two groups. One group made the chicken spaghetti and the other group made delicious-smelling brownies for dessert. I'm sure that whoever is eating this lunch will be pleased. Lastly, after taking a short tour of the facility, we went outside and took a group photo.
Our last stop was to the Family Promise building. The marketing and development director led us to a conference room where we talked about homelessness. We then watched a video about the program, which explained how Family Promise helps those troubled families get through the hard times. After that, we were introduced to Edna, the volunteer coordinator. She gave us our designated jobs, and we got to work. At the end, as we usually do, we took a group photo. -written by Hannah Lowe, edited by Jessica Kodsi
